A chinese villager who sells more software daily than you do

This article is reproduced from Max Klein

I was alone in the center of a small Chinese town, the weakly glowing streetlights hardly illuminating the streets. The silence was heavy and absolute. It was different from the eternal light and sound of Shenzhen, and the high elevation gave the air an unusual taste. Things were not the same up here in the mountains, and this strangeness seemed a bit menacing. The roads had been tarred, courtesy of the rich central government who gave special attention to the Chinese minorities, but the villages up here in the mountains of Yunnan province did not have many cars to wear down the roads. So they felt incomplete, and leaves lay about, their crushing beneath my feet giving my walk a strange soundtrack.

A group of men sat in a doorway smoking tobacco from a big bong, watching me walk past with impassive faces. I hurried a bit. What I was looking for was near, I knew. I turned a corner into a small side street, and saw it – the red and blue glow of the humming fluorescent lights, the pictures of the scantily clad lady with big breasts. I had found the local internet cafe.

I walked in through the narrow doorway, squeezing past a young teenage couple holding hands and staring out of the door. The guy had a scar across his forehead, I wondered idly what their story was, it may have been an amazing love story, it could have been endlessly tragic, perhaps they were completely boring. I’ll never know, because I walked into that room and was hit by the combined glow of hundreds of computer screens, different figures danced across many screens in some dance dance revolution clone, colourful websites reflected off the eyes of engrossed guys, smoking men scrolled through the news, cliques of teens starred together at a screen and shouted and laughed. The room was huge and it was filled with people surfing the internet and playing games. The internet cafe, long thought to be dead, had simply retreated here into the mountains, and it fed the local population with all the entertainment they could not afford to have at home.

After the necessary registration with my passport at the counter, I bought an entire night of internet surfing, starting off by checking what was new at TechCrunch. I went through the usual schedule of websites I read, skipping only facebook and twitter, as they don’t work here.

Being the only foreigner in there, I was getting a lot of looks, giggles and yelled out “HELLOs” from the kids around. I expected them to come talk to me at some point, so when someone tapped my shoulder, I was suprised that rather than some spiky haired teenager, it was a somewhat middle-aged smiling man with a cigarette dangling from his lip. He introduced himself with the sentence: “TechCrunch is my favorite website, too”. His english was heavily accented, but good.

I simply looked up at him, unsure what to reply. I didn’t need to say anything, because he started talking to me about the last few articles he had read on TechCrunch. I got only a few sentences in, mostly in agreement with his somewhat unusual but pretty insightful opinions about what they wrote. He spoke as if he had never spoken to anyone about TechCrunch, and needed to get all his thoughts out.

After 30 minutes of mostly listening, he invited me out to have a drink with him and his friends. He excitedly made phone calls in the local dialect and we went out. We walked over to some local food place, and sat outside on plastic chairs, several beers quickly appearing on the table. Soon, several of his friends popped in a shinily new BYD car, and they joined me.

He told me what he does: he sells software. And he sells a lot of software. Every month, he makes more than $5000, which is more than 50 times the average salary where he lives. He told me how he does it, and it’s a bit unusual.

He had learnt how to program from a friend of his. They had both moved to Kunming and started working, but when his dad got sick, he had to go home and farm to keep the family alive. His dad was sick for close to a year, and they needed money. Unable to travel, he had started looking for jobs on Odesk, Rentacoder and such sites based on recommendation from his friend. After writing some software for a client, he noticed something important:

- If he simply looked at the list of software projects available for jobs, he would have ideas on what software to develop.

He did this, and rather than making software for clients, he created his own software products, which he put on the internet. He said that 3 days after he copied a simple idea from the rentacoder list on his website, he was making 2 sales a day. $20 per day, which basically doubled his monthly earnings as a farmer. He continued working on more products and copying more ideas, and soon he had 10 different software that he was selling. Sales were low at the start, but even then for him it was a lot of money.

He kept doing this, cloning software he found that people wanted by looking at open projects on rentacoder, most of his software being related to video encoding. Additionally, he would take open source software, change the way it looked and sell it online. He said he’d get a few refunds, but most people would purchase it without complaining. He said he tried selling Firefox for a while, but sales were very low due to the free competition.

At the moment he’s making more than $5000 a month, and he’s been making it for more than 4 years already. He’s one of the bigger players in the video encoding software market.

As I left, he dropped me off at the local hotel where my friends were. He shook my hand enthusiastically and said he would email me, but that he had to sleep now, because he had to go to the farm early the next morning. Surprised, I asked him why he still farmed. He shrugged and lifted his palms in that typical smiling manner that the villagers there have. “No why!” he said. “I enjoy farming”.

Google hit with Nexus One sales model complaints

Google support forums are awash with people looking for help for problems with their Nexus One phones -- and unable to find it.

The volume of complaints points to a problem that Google faces now that it has decided to try to push a new cell-phone-buying model in the U.S. Since most people buy subsidized phones from a mobile operator, they turn to the operator when they have problems.

[ Stay up on tech news and reviews from your smartphone at infoworldmobile.com. | Get the best iPhone apps for pros with our business iPhone apps finder. | See which smartphone is right for you in our mobile "deathmatch" calculator. ]

But Google is selling the phone directly to end-users. That means many users are turning to it first, and the search giant doesn’t have the kind of customer support that mobile-phone users are accustomed to.

Google appears to be only accepting e-mail customer queries, to which it pledges to reply in one to two days -- far too long, say most people who are complaining online.

Many people are also turning to T-Mobile and HTC, but getting little help there. T-Mobile is often referring people back to avi to wmv mac either Google or HTC for answers to questions. HTC is often referring people back to T-Mobile, according to complaints online.

One customer going by the name Roland78 said he was transferred between T-Mobile and HTC four times, spending a total of one-and-a-half hours on the phone with customer service. "T-Mobile also said Google hasn't provided them with any support documents for the phone. Welcome to direct sales Google!” he wrote.

Another using the name SouthFlGuy was also sent back and forth between HTC and T-Mobile after finding no help from Google. "I guess I was under the wrong impression but I thought Google would handle the service on the phone," he wrote.

Several people on one thread regarding poor 3G performance on the phone report being told by HTC customer service people that the Nexus One doesn’t support 3G, although the phone does. Another got an e-mail response in five hours from Google suggesting that the user try restarting the phone to see if that solves the problem.

More than 425 comments are listed on a thread about service eligibility issues. Some of them are from people DVD to MOV Mac who say that they ought to be eligible for the subsidized price of the phone but the Google sales site says they aren’t. Many others are simply complaining of a policy that requires even longtime T-Mobile customers to pay more for the phone Mac DVD to mkv than new customers.

Yet others on the site complain about placing an order and failing to get even an order confirmation three days later.

Google, T-Mobile and HTC did not immediately reply to requests for comment.

"I'm a Mac user. I have mountains of DVD disc and recently bought a WD-TV HD Player. So I want to convert all DVDs to some format in order to play on my HD player. Why we need to convert DVD to MKV with subtitles Mac ?

Many people met the same problem that when they convert DVD to video and watch it on laptop or Mac, the quality gets bad. As we known, a DVD movie is often 8 GB in size. Comment by Justin C - May 14th, 2009 at 4:37 am

I have a 30 gig Zine and have purchased songs from the Marketplace using Zune cards recieved as gifts. For some reason though the DRM on the files I have legally purchased will not allow me to play the songs on the Zune. I have tried several things suggested by Microsoft but without success.

With this program I am now allowed to enjoy the music that I paid for.
I am glad to see iTunes move away from DRM in some respect as it does not punish those who are paying and supporting artists.
Being a music producer and content provider myself I know how important that is.

Awesome product! Thanks Wondershare and GAOTD! Easily removed drm from my music.wma's that has been bugging me for years! Many many thanks :)

I believe this product is amazing. It does exactly what it states, and with ease. It is easy to use and understand.
I have already found it convenient, after owning it for only a couple of hours. I would recommend this product to anyone that wants to convert a file of any type to an audio format. It works for me well, using Vista Home Basic as my o.s.
The conversions play well in my Media Player, also.
THANK YOU, G.A.O.T.D.!!!!

Comment by Joel J. - May 15th, 2009 at 2:38 am

The good:
- easy-to-use user interface
- supports the most common audio formats (mp3, aac, ogg, wma, flac, etc.)
- can rip music from the most common video files
- saves audio metadata (e.g. title, artist) to the output (mp3 and wma)
- can play/preview the added files
- uses LAME mp3 encoder under the hood (maybe it's the best mp3 encoder)
- uses VBR for m4a, aac, ogg

The bad:
- a bit slow Ogg Vorbis encoding
- doesn't save metadata for many formats
- no support for metadata editing (I think it is important if you want to categorize your music)
- the LAME mp3 encoder is not the latest
- no VBR settings for mp3 (too few mp3 settings)

In my opinion VBR setting are very important for portable players because it can save some space without quality loss.

Free alternatives:
- winLAME
- BonkEnc

I-Pad or ITampon is It? : What 5 Important Features Does the IPad Tablet NOT Have

I just noticed something on Twitter. I noticed that" iTampon" was now trending in response to Apple's " iPad tablet". I laughed, laughed and you guessed it... laughed some more! ha...Sorry Steve Jobs.

I have been reading about what iPad tablet has. So I decided to write an article on 5 features i-Pad does NOT have. To come full circle, let's do a quick recap of what

Apple's iPad is meant to do.

"What is the iPad tablet?"
Steve Jobs (Apple's CEO) unveiled the latest product by Apple the "iPad" on 27th January. It is supposed to fill the gap that exists between smartphones and laptops.( Ok Steve, if you say there is a gap, there must be a gap.. I guess.Hmm)

"What does the iPad tablet look like?"
The iPad looks like an over-sized iPhone. It has that flat, black screen. But underneath the surface it is trying hard to act like a laptop. Poor dear! iPad is having some identity crisis.

Only time will tell if Apple's i-Pad will be a success or an iToss
Now that we have covered the basics let's see what the iPad tablet does not have.

1. i-Pad does not have a cool name- I know this because I came to write this article following iTampons on Twitter as a leading trend. Sheesh! Imagine sitting in a lounge somewhere and asking a stranger, can I please borrow your iPad? Apple's marketing team should have done a few more surveys and decided on a better name for starters. Me feels i-Pad the name makes i-Sad.

2. No Multitasking options- What this means is you can do just one task at a time. Don't even think about running AIM in the background while you're writing an email. Even netbooks have Multitasking! Lord Almighty, what were they thinking? This was a complaint with the iPhone too. It would have been nice if this could have been prevented in the iPad (still giggling).

3. No USB/Flash- Many of us are used to the fact that Apple devices are not Flash compatible. But I think it is high time Apple starts looking in that area. Even netbooks have a solution to not having a DVD drive. It is flash compatible!

How to make free phone calls on an iPod touch

You love your slender, touchscreen-enabled iPod touch and rely upon it heavily for music, photos, videos, games and apps. And even though it's not an iPhone, you can use it to place free phone calls. Here's how.

Want to know how to make free international phone calls on your iPod touch?

Yep, it's possible - but you need a piece of hardware and software to pull it off.

Here's what you need.

1. If you don't have one already, pick up a 3.5mm jack headset for your iPod touch. About halfway down the earphone cord is a tiny microphone so the person you're calling can hear you. I used one that shipped with my Blackberry Curve and it worked just fine. You can buy one for as low as $2.16 by shopping here.

2. On your iPod touch, download the free Skype application for iPod touch/iPhone and sign up for a free account if you don't already have one. I used the same login and password as the Skype on my PC. If you have a Canadian iTunes account, however, then you probably know Skype isn't offered yet in the Great White North (for mobile phones), so try a free VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) app like iCall.

3. Now have your iPod touch or iPhone join a wireless network, such as in your own Wi-Fi hotspot at home. You can then place calls to another Skype/iCall user for free. You don't have to pay a cent if your friends or family have a free account. With Skype, you can also buy inexpensive "Skype Out" credits to call any landline or cell phone.

Easy, no? Indeed. But keep in mind if you have a first-generation iPod touch you'll need some sort of microphone add-on in order to place calls.

Put Limewire Frostwire music, Youtube videos, video files, games on iPod,It's free!

Lot of people have iPods, but many of us still experience difficulties putting music, and videos on iPod. I have been using my iPod for quite a long time, and the five tips below are what I have learned to put everything I can on my iPod:

1. Limewire Frostwire music to iPod
2. Youtube videos to iPod
3. Nokia wma music tracks to iPod
4. Put games on iPod
5. Sync music and videos to iPod

1. Put music and videos from Limewire to iPod

Limewire is a download tool I assume lot of us use. I often use it to download free music and videos and put them on my iPod. If you don't have Limewire, you can download it from its official website.http://www.limewire.com/download it is totally free.
Search and download songs from Limewire. You may get songs in all sorts of formats, but not all formats are supported by iPod.the video downloaded from Limewire Frostwire are always AVI and other video files that iPod doesn't read.

Usually I select three formats: MP3, AAC and M4A formats that are supported by iPod and can be directly transferred to iPod using iTunes. For the detailed specs info, you can visit http://www.apple.com/ipod/specs.html . After you download the songs, open your iTunes, click "File" from the upper left corner, select "Add file to library", browse your computer hard drive and find the songs downloaded by Limewire, select the songs you prefer, click OK and the songs will be put in your iTunes. Then you can just transfer the songs to your iPod from iTunes.

2. Youtube videos to iPod
I often visit Youtube to watch videos and sometimes I download videos from Youtube to put on my iPod. Youtube videos are in FLV formats, so I use a free online FLV converter to do the conversion

Firstly, go to Youtube and open the page of the video you want to put on your iPod. And you will find the Youtube URL of this video to the right of the playback window. Then copy this URL. See the highlighted area in the figure below:

Secondly, go to http://vixy.net/ , paste the copied URL into the URL field of this web page, and select "MP4 for iPod/PSP" from the "Converts to" drop-down list. Then click "Start" below this list to start the conversion. See the highlighted areas below:

Finally, after the conversion, this website will provide a download link for you to download the converted MP4 file. When you see the link, you can just download the final file from the link, save the downloaded MP4 file on your computer and use iTunes to sync it on to your iPod.

3. Nokia wma music tracks to iPod
Music downloads from Nokia Music Store's Comes with Music is DRM protected WMA of 192kbps,which can't burn to CD to rip to MP3 or play on other player like iPod,zune that don't have authorize license.Does it mean that we are unable share any music from nokia store?

Anything is possible !

You need a 3rd party converter to remove DRM protection first, and then convert them to iPod Zune compatible formats

What I picked for my iPod is Wondershare Media Converter, which performs all round as DRM remover and music & video converter, fast and very easy to handle.

Actually, this converter is the best all-in-one program i ever had for me to convert any format video music ,even any DRM protected files to any popular format . such as it also could remove DRM from iTunes movie and song files. that is to say you can convert iTunes DRM protected files to avi or other format in order to play on the other portable player. you can just download a trial version to see if it is what you need.

Tips: please remember that this program can only help you to convert authorized DRM protected files to common unprotected files legally, that is to say you have to buy the protected files and get authorization first and then you want to share them with your friends or want to play them on anther portable player ,so you can convert protetced wmv wma or iTunes m4v m4p m4b to any other format with this tool.As we know, it's illegal for us to convert the files without authorization.

4. Put games on iPod

An iPod is not a professional game player like a PSP, but it does handle some easy and fun games nicely. One way to get iPod games is to buy them from iTunes store and sync them onto your iPod. If you want play free games on your iPod, which is something I often do, you can use iPodLinux and Rockbox, and there is a great guide you can refer to on how to put games on iPod with these two tools. Click here to view the guide.

5. Sync music and videos to iPod

Obviously, using iTunes to sync files to iPod is the choice of many iPod users. I use iTunes myself but I have found it a bit clunky. Apart from iTunes, there are also apps you can use to sync files to your iPod, either free or not:
a. YamiPod. YaniPod is very popular free tool to transfer files to iPod and it has different version for different operation systems.

b. Xplay. A friend recommended Xplay. I have tried it and found it is a great tool to sync files to my iPod and I just need to "drag-and-drop" my files to my iPod. I haven't bought it yet but I think it is definitely worth a try.

c. MGTEK. This app can sync files with Windows Media Player 11. It is also a very nice tool and pretty cheap.

d. Wondershare iPod Video Transfer is professional iTransfer tool. It can transfer iPod files to computeror iTunes. It can also transfer itunes to another computer

There are a lot more sync tools and you can refer to a comparison list on Wikipedia to and see which ones best work for you.

The above is my experience with converting and transferring files from various sources to my iPod, and I hope it can shed some light.
